Recurrent HPV - What is it & what can you do?
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common infection that is the cause of almost all cases of cervical cancer. For most women, HPV is cleared on its own by the body’s immune system within one or two years and will not develop into cervical cancer. In some women, the infection does not go away and can increase the risk of cell changes developing in the cervix. In rare cases, these cell changes can result in cervical cancer.
Recurrent HPV is a sign that the vaginal microbiome might need some support.
Holistic treatment for HPV considers several different factors including:
〰️ the vaginal & cervical microbiome
〰️ hormone health
〰️ immune dysregulation
〰️ nervous system
〰️ nutrient deficiencies
〰️ diet & lifestyle contributors
〰️ gut health
〰️ partner mircrobiome - penile, vaginal + oral
Treatment, as always depends on the individual and their unique underlying drivers, and needs to thoroughly address all factors implicated in HPV for that individual.
Nutritional interventions that have been shown to support clearance of HPV include:
〰️ vitamin D where low levels are present
〰️ intra-vaginal probiotics
〰️ DIM / broccoli sprouts to address issues with oestrogen metabolism
〰️ zinc
〰️ medicinal mushrooms for immune regulation
〰️ specific herbs: licorice, green tea, tumeric, st johns wort
